Hello Nickpb. I'm in Outlook.live.com right now. When I compose a new message (CTRL + N) and then press ESC, Outlook will close the new message. When I open a message from my inbox with a double click, ESC will not close the new windows that appear, but ATL + F4 will. Back on the Inbox, the reading pane is running, Clicking a message once shows it in the reading pane. Arrow up and Arrow down go from message to message. I'm using Edge browser and I do not have the Beta turned on.
I hope this helps. Chris Menard. So I have the same conditions as you (Preview pane off) and I also open the mail with one click, however when I press ESC, the window does not close. This started happening only yesterday, and at the same time the 'Sender Image' appeared in my mail list. I have never seen the sender image before and this is what made me think that MS had changed something their end. I've turned them off in the settings but it has made no difference.
Other than usual Windows updates, nothing else has changed with my setup. Regards, Nick. Three things to mention. Here is my Chrome version. Version 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit) The second thing, and more important, is other Outlook users are having this issue.

One last thing, check your keyboard setting under options. See the screenshot I attached.
Chris Menard. Thanks Chris. I am using the free Web version. Maybe this is MS's way of getting users to pay for the full service. I think I'll wait it out and see if it gets fixed sometime. Just for awareness of anyone reading these posts, I had a response from 'Microsoft Online Support' telling me to call them and they would 'help me fix the problem' (see below).
